In 1976 a stamp was issued on which the Wuppertal mono railway is pictured. The railway celebrated its 75th anniversary at that time. The stamp, printed in offset, shows a train in a landscape with river.

Imperforated Wilhelmina

Mister v.d. L. in Meppel was the first one who surprised us on January 18th last with the information that in Meppel 2500 imperforated 10 cents stamps were delivered. This means that a pair of scissors have to be used in order to separate the stamps as was common practise in the period 1852-1864. This would not matter, but with shortage of staff nowadays, it is very time-consuming. We tried to buy the whole stock, but only a few were available.

Stanley Gibbons

On a day in 1863 two sailors paid a visit to Gibbon's stamp shop and asked him if he was interested in stamps from abroad. Yes, he was. They returned next day and offered him a sack full of Cape-of-Good-Hope stamps, mostly triangular ones. There were a lot of strips and blocks among them. They told Gibbons that they had won the stamps in a lottery during a church bazaar.

During the war the Centrale Propaganda Commissie voor de Kinderzegels (Central Propaganda Committee for Children's stamps) was dissolved, because the members did not want to work together with the pro-German's NSB party members.

In my childhood I was happy with my collection of The Netherlands for years. My eldest stamp was the 5 cent of the second emission (1864). Later, when I am grown-up and earn a living, I will buy the first Dutch stamps and have a complete set, were my thoughts at that time. In those days I did not realise that more costly stamps existed. How plder the stamps the more expensive they were I thought, for years. I could not afford a catalogue.

At the moment an important exhibition is being held in The Hague. On this exhibition many self-portraits of Rembrandt are on display. The Dutch Post issued a miniature sheet with ten different Old Masters and a priority stamp dedicated to the work of Rembrandt in June this year.

The Euro is coming. Europeans are confronted with this slogan daily. Only 1000 days and we can pay with it in the shop round the corner! In France the Post Office tries to accustom the customer by adding the Euro value on some of her products.

In the Philatelistisch Maandblad of 1916 the story of the discovery of M. Heijmans was published: One night when I was going to put a 3 cent stamp of the Jubilee issue on a letter I made a starling discovery. It was quite unexpected, for thousands of these stamps had gone through my hands, and I had never noticed anything special about them.

In April Eva Besnyö from Amsterdam was awarded with the Erich Salomon Award 1999. This is the most important yearly German award granted by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Photographie (German Photography Foundation).

On January 1 1999 a new code was introduced in The Netherlands for sorting letters. Periodicals are printed with an indication on the front side the so called KIX-code.

Dutch castles

The Dutch postal authorities emitted a series of stamps in 1951 bearing pictures of Dutch castles. On the stamp of 2 cents the castle of Hillenraad is pictured, on the 5c stamp the castle of Bergh, on the 6c the castle of Hernen. The stamps of 10c and 20c show pictures of the castles of Rechteren and Moermond respectively.

In Ireland on February 1 1999 the last official message was transmitted by means of Morse code. This code will no longer be applied, because it is replaced by other means of transmitting in which communication satellites are used.

Breitling Orbiter 3

The Breitling Orbiter 3 was the first balloon which flew non-stop round the world. In a tribute to the world-record trip of the balloonists Bernard Piccard and Brian Jones, the Swiss Post issued a stamp. On this stamp we see the balloon over the Alps on 1 March 1999, the first day of their successful journey.

Perforation

The Irishmen Henry Archer is considered to be the inventor of perforation. He sold his patents to the British Ministry of Finance. Archer completed thereafter his invention. Some prototypes were build. The greatest problem was how to get rid of the remains from the holes. These little pieces of paper caused the machine to a standstill over and over.

On 29 April 1999 the Irish Post issued a stamp commemorating the centenary of birth of Sean Francis Lemass. He was born on 15 July 1899 and was educated in this city. In 1916 after joining the Irish Volunteers he fought for the freedom of Ireland from 1916 to 1922 when he was captured and interned.

The artist and postage stamp designer Paul Citroen was born in Berlin in 1896. He studied at the Bauhaus in Weimar. He got lessons from, among others, Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky and Johannes Itten. In 1927 he came to The Netherlands and about twenty years later he designed the Summer issue of 1949.

On 19 March 1999 a stamp designed by the Australian painter Robert Carter was issued commemorating the double of Cape Horn by sailing ship "Pamir". During the 1930s the wheat trade between Australia and Europe reached it's peak. The Aland sailing ships were extremely busy crossing the big oceans.

In the end of June 1999 the doors of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam were opened for the public again. During the last months a huge internal rebuilding took place. Besides that the building was enlarged with a new wing designed by the Japanese Kisho Kurokawa. In the future this new part of the building will be used for temporary exhibitions.

The first Children's stamps in The Netherlands with an extra fee for children benefaction was issued in 1924. Since then every year a series of stamps was issued. At first these issues consisted of three stamps, but in 1926 this was changed to four. In the years prior to the issue of 1931 the sales went down.

In Number 495 of 'Postal Service Today', a magazine, edited by the Postal Authorities of the Republic of China (Taiwan), was edited the first part of an interesting article about whales and dolphins. The article has been written by Mr Wu Chih-lieuh. The article is richly illustrated with 44 stamps with pictures of whales or dolphins.

The Europe stamps of the Faroe Islands picture waterfalls this year. There are no large rivers on these islands and therefore no large waterfalls. But it rains a lot and when it has been pouring rain, the rivers and streams may become fairy large.

Two postage stamps were issued on the theme parks and natural reserves. The first stamp in this series is dedicated to the Haute-Sûre National Park. The second stamp pictures the footbridge in Ardennes-Eifel National Park near Echternach, which connects the two banks of the Sûre.

Stamp booklet Hugo Simberg

In the series Pro Filatelia Finland issued a stamp booklet in honor of one of its special painters. It is published on occasion of the internordic stamp exhibition Nordia 99, which was held in Turku from 24 untill 26 September 1999. Two stamps in the booklet show paintings of an artist who was for a long time misunderstood: Hugo Simberg.

Switzerland new issues

From 21 to 25 June 2000 the national stamp exhibition NABA 2000 will be held in St. Gall. About 300 collections from Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Germany and Holland will be on display. The Swiss Post will issue two miniature sheets to commemorate this event. The first one was created by students of the St. Gall College of Design under supervision of Hansruedi Buob. The second sheet will be issued in 2000.

The Aland sailing clubs are very active culminating in the summer months. Competitions and other events are arranged several times a week and the number of competitors are usually large. On this new stamp the Match Racing is pictured. The stamp was designed by Martin Mörck and issued on 5 August 1999.

New Frama

Finland Post introduced the renewed Frama-stamp vending machines on 1 September 1999. Now the Finnish Post Museum delivers the Frama-stamps also abroad on order. Stamp vending machines have serial numbers, and the machine at the Museum prints out number 3.

On 23 November 1999 three new series will be issued in Switzerland. After the four-year cycle "Animals living in or near water" the new stamp cycle focuses on children's books. This year the series depicts the little clown Nicolo from the picture book of the same name by Verena Pavony and one stamp is dedicated to Margaret Strub's "Hinaus aufs Land".

The Aland Islands are a group of more than 6000 islands in the eastern part of the Baltic Sea between Sweden and Finland, east of Stockholm. The total area is about 1500 km2 and there are living approximately 25,000 inhabitants. Their main language is Swedish. Although the islands have a certain form of autonomy, they still form a province in Finland.

The French Post issues a Red Cross stamp dedicated to art on 15 November 1999. The 3f stamp shows a modern work of art from Pierre-Marie Valat. André Lavergne designed this stamp and the surcharge is meant for the Red Cross.
