Aland 3 January 2000

This new miniature sheet does not resemble anything the Aland Post has previously issued. The sheet consists of Aland's first round stamps ever. The four stamps are embossed and show the international peace symbol and the three Aland colors are used as well as white.

The first stamp of the new millennium is dedicated to the transition from 1999 to 2000. The postage stamp shows cracking fireworks with, as a festoon cleaving through the air, a festive representation of the year in numbers. The year runs through each horizontal row of se-tenant stamps.

The first stamps of Finland in the new millennium are dedicated to the city of Helsinki. A booklet containing eight stamps is issued with two sheetlets of four stamps.

Machin Elizabeth

Since 1967 the English Post uses the design of Machin for her definitives of Elizabeth II. Royal Mail will issue a new version of the classic Machin Queen's Head stamp for the Millennium.

Pingu is back

In March 1999 the Swiss Post issued two postage stamps featuring Pingu. Pingu is a penguin dressed up as a postman. On 6 December 1999 the two stamps (70 and 90c) were reissued.

Great Britain 2000

Royal Mail will issue 4 stamps each month in 2000. These 48 stamps will form the "Royal Mail's Millennium Collection" and will provide a snapshot of Britain today. The 2000 collection will be based solely on photographs.

Ten high lights The Netherlands

In October 1999 the Dutch Postal Authorities issued a miniature sheet with ten stamps. Each stamp represented a Dutch historical high light from the 20th century. These high lights were chosen by the public. For the first time in history the stamps were presented to the public in a special television show. Also other issues paid attention to these eventful stamps.

Switzerland presented her new definitive stamps which depicts souvenirs. Souvenirs belong to Switzerland like the Matterhorn, alphorn players and Emmental cheese. Virtually no other country offers so many souvenirs. These articles generate a revenue estimated at 125 million Swiss francs a year.

Fire and light

In 2000 the Royal Mail will issue 48 stamps forming the Millennium Collection. Each month four new stamps will be released. Unlike last year, photographs are used for this year's postage stamps.

Israel honors King Hussein

In June 1951, young Hussein accompanied his grandfather, King Abdulla of Jordan, to prayers at the El-Aksa mosque on the temple Mount in Jerusalem. An assassin killed the king there, because of his efforts to reach peace with Israel. One of the bullets hit Hussein, but was deflected by a medal. Hussein's personality, which radiated royal dignity and human warmth, made him one of the most admired leaders of the Arabic world.

Finland will issue a miniature sheet with two different stamps in honor of the fourfold rally champion Tommi Mäkinen on 3 March 2000. The face value of each stamp is 3.50m, thus the miniature sheet sells at 7m.

Four new flower postage stamps went on sale on 9 February. The subjects are Oeder's Lousewort (5.4 kr), White Water Lily (8 kr), Globe Flower (14 kr) and Melancholy Thistle (25 kr). The four stamps are colorful and beautiful representatives of Norwegian flora. The four stamps were printed in offset by Norges Banks Seddeltrykkeri.

A new $1.10 is also released to cater for the New Zealand Post international rate changes to the postcard and aerogramme rate to anywhere in the world.

By a treaty of 1903 a strip of land in the center of the country Panama was granted to the United States of America for the purposes of construction, maintenance and protection of the canal. This canal was built through the isthmus of Panama during the years 1905 - 1915. The canal connected the Atlantic Ocean - via the Caribbean Sea - and the Pacific Ocean.

One of the palaces of HM the Queen of England houses a gigantic stamp collection. In fact there are three collections in hundreds of albums: there are the green, the blue and the red collection. On the opening day of the Expo 2000 Norway Post presented two stamps to mark this event. One of Norway's most prominent contemporary artists, Marianne Heske, is the artist of the stamps with the face value 4.20 and 6.30 kr. "Heske is an innovative artist, and her two extremely untraditional stamps have added to the diversity of this year's stamp programme". Heske was also responsible for the artistic design of the Norwegian pavilion at the exposition.

Graphic designer Mika Launis' bold conception of a heraldic lion befitting our time won the Lion stamp design competition for invited artists, arranged by Finland Post in the spring of 2000.
