Postal conference
This nice postage stamp of Luxembourg memorizes the first international postal conference.Conference In Paris
In 1863 a conference was held in Paris on the initiative of the Postmaster General of the United States of America, Montgomery Blair, to try to pursue the postal reform process at an international level. Other attempts made up to the end of the 1860s to improve the international postal service on the basis of bilateral agreements had not managed to keep in step with the already rapid pace of the technological, economic, commercial and cultural developments. Heinrich von Stephan, chief postal officer of the Northern German Confederation, then conceived the plan of an international postal union.Swiss government organised a postal conference in Bern
The Swiss government organised a postal conference in Bern on 15 September 1874, which was attended by representatives of 22 countries. On 9 October 1874 the agreement of Bern was signed and the Universal Postal Union was established.Stamp in detail
