Sustainability and the environment feature on the new millennium stamps of Great Britain "Life and Earth". These stamps were issued on 4 April 2000.Life and Earth
"Life and Earth" is issued in presentation packs and is the fourth set of Royal Mail's Year 2000 Millennium Collection. The stamps were printed by De La Rue Security Print in gravure, perforation: 14.5 x 14.The presentation pack comprises a full set of mint stamps and a brochure containing information about the stamps as well as design and printing details. Turner Duckworth designed this brochure.
Web of Life/London Zoo
The London Zoo's astonishing exhibition is the inspiration behind the stamp "Web of Life" (1st class). The "Web of Life" exhibition tells the story of the amazing variety of life on earth. Using a unique combination of live animal exhibits, interactive displays and on-show breeding facilities, the exhibition looks at how animals adapt to different environments, how new species evolve and the threats facing their future.The stamp features a photograph of South American leaf-cutter ants from Tony Stone Images. These ants are one of the stars of the Web of Life.
ECOS/Ballymena
ECOS/Ballymena (2nd class) features a photograph of reed beds taken by Andy Earl. The project consists of a visitor centre where the building, displays and surrounding landscape will be integrated to communicate a central theme of environmental sustainability.The development recognises and builds around the flood plain of the river Braid; ECOS will provide a mosaic of wet grasslands, pools and dry spots. Excavation of a larger lake created an additional habitat and the fill material was used to raise areas above the flood level to construct a play area and the visitor centre, which is within the main ECOS landmark building.
Earth Centre/Doncaster
One of the UK's first millennium landmark visitor attractions, "Earth Centre/Doncaster", is featured on the 44p stamp. The Earth Centre addresses one of the next Millennium's key issues how to live and work sustainable without damaging the environment. This hands-on visitor centres carries a serious message how to live happily without damaging the environment or other people.Built on the site of two former coal mines, The Earth Centre, which is helping to transform this part of South Yorkshire, boats four major indoor exhibitions, with a further 25 acres of gardens, play areas and adventure trails.

Project SUZY/Teeside
A photograph by Fleur Olby adorns the 64p stamp "Project SUZY/Teeside". Suzy is an innovative attraction which will include an earth sheltered "Ecostructure" demonstrating how man-made structures can emerge into the natural contours of the land. Suzy will also incorporate the latest energy efficient systems along with an exhibition area with interactive displays enabling visitors to examine the impact of their lifestyle upon the environment.More information Postage Stamps
