Stamp Day 2006 stamp in Switzerland
Stamp takes young train conductor on world trip

Winning postage stamp design
From December 2005 till mid-March 2006, Swiss Post held its seventh stamp design competition to be judged by the general public. The entries of the artists from Olten and the surrounding area depicted a wide variety of motifs inspired by the theme of the "150th anniversary of Olten the railway town" which is also the venue of Stamp Day 2006. The design entered by Bruno Castellani from Trimbach was the clear winner, convincing the majority of the over 20,000 strong jury that voted by post or via the Internet. Rolf Büttiker, Speaker of the Swiss Council of States from Solothurn, unveiled the winning design chosen by the general public in a ceremony staged at the end of March in a decommissioned dining car at platform 1 in Olten Station. It depicts a little boy sporting a train conductor's hat. The delighted victor, graphic artist Bruno Castellani who specializes mainly in corporate design, explained that "Designing the stamp was a career highpoint, which raised completely different challenges from those I usually face."Railway town Olten
On 9 June 1856, Olten laid the foundation for the railway era in Switzerland, with the arrival of the first train on the Aarau-Emmenbrücke line in Olten Station. This day also marked the start of its spectacular development from a modest provincial town to a modern residential, work and activity base, a trend which has continued until the present day in "Switzerland's Railway Capital". In planning construction projects, Olten is still acknowledged as the hub and control centre of the whole railway network. A fact to which competition winner Bruno Castellani refers in his stamp design: "The little boy stands for the future of the railways and is intended to symbolize the fact that Olten continues to be of crucial importance in today's society."Bruno Castellani
Bruno Castellani, aged 53, is married to Johanna and has a 13-year-old son. He has been working as a freelance graphic designer for more than twenty years and now heads Atelier GWD (Grafik Web Design) in Trimbach where a part-time graphic and a web designer artist support him. Over the past five years, the GWD team has specialized mainly in corporate design, so its core business includes designing visual identities for firms. In his free time, Bruno Castellani collects companies' jubilee publications but has no other hobbies in the narrow sense of the term, though he is generally interested in movement.Postage stamp in detail
