Norway's great actors

Tordis Maurstad
Tordis Maurstad (1901-1997) belonged to Norway's acting elite for several decades. She was well equipped when she made her way to the capital from her hometown Kristiansund. Her father, Albert Witzøe, was a culture bearer there and inspired in the young Tordis a love of words and of writing. However, she was attracted to the theatre. She was given her first acting job at Det Norske Teatret (The Norwegian Theatre) in 1923. Her first parts were not very challenging, but she was given more important roles as time went on. She often played opposite Lars Tvinde and Edvard Drabløs.
In the course of 58 years as an actress, Tordis Maurstad played 160 parts.
Rolf Just Nilsen
Rolf Just Nilsen (1931-1981) was a comedian with an incredible ability to imitate politicians, colleagues and other celebrities. Einar Gerhardsen, John Lyng and Bent Røiseland were some of his victims. He was never malicious. None of the persons he caricatured ever felt defamed. Quite the contrary.Rolf Just Nilsen started his career at Studioteatret, but his love of revue theatre led to an engagement at Chat Noir from 1952 until 1959. He returned again later after a spell at Edderkoppen, and subsequently joined the ensemble at Det Norske Teatret. For a number of years he also belonged to the Oslo Nye Teater's team of capable actors. Rolf Just Nilsen also appeared in Norwegian films, such as "Himmel of Hav", "To pa top" and "Alle tiders kupp".
Lars Tvinde
Lars Tvinde (1886-1973) was one of the pillars of Det Norske Teater. For 53 years, he performed practically without a break until his retirement in 1956. During these years he qualified as a great actor through dozens of different roles. He was awarded the King's Medal of Merit in gold and an artist's scholarship.Lars Tvinde was from Voss and he cultivated and maintained his singing Voss dialect throughout his career. It was a local drama group in Voss that inspired Lars Tvinde to dream of a stage career. He made his debut in Det Norske Teater's initial production of Ivar Aasen's "Ervingen". It was a small part, but it convinced Lars Tvinde that his life was in the theatre.
Henry Gleditsch
Henry Gleditsch (1902-1942) was actor-manager of Trøndelag Teater in Trondheim. Without his unselfish efforts to establish a new theatre in the old building, obtain the initial capital and gather together a young, enthusiastic team, it would have been impossible to create a new era in the cultural life of Trøndelag.Gleditsch had administrative experience from Sølen in Oslo in 1934. These were the premises which Leif Juster later re-christened Edderkopen Revyteater. He had acting experience from Centralteatret, Den Nationale Scene in Bergen and Stavanger Teater, and he had also been on tour with his own ensemble. Trondheim triggered off his dream of a new theatre for audiences from central Norway and places further north. Henry Gleditsch went from door to door offering the people of Trondheim shares in the new theatre. He set high cultural standards for his theatre.
Ibsen's "Vildanden" was Gletisch's last production. He took part in the dress rehearsal as Dr. Relling. The next day he was taken hostage by the Gestapo and was shot the following morning in the Falstad woods.
Norma Balean
Norma Balean (1907-1989) was one of Bergen's most popular actresses for many years. Her audiences, both young and old, were fascinated by her charisma, charm and acting skills. Before, during and after World War II, she took part in operettas, comedies and musicals at Den Nasjonale Scene in Bergen. These productions were often quite dependent on Norma Balean's participation.Norma Balean was born of an English father and a Norwegian mother. When the couple separated, mother and daughter settled in Bergen. At the age of 21, Norma was contracted by the theatre, which was looking for a young, dark-haired girl of her age with a pretty face and a good singing voice. A combination of these qualities gave Norma Balean a part in Emmerich Kalman's operetta, "Die Zirkusprinzessin". This led from success to success, including roles in theatre's serious repertoire: "Hamlet", "Peer Gynt", and others. The many comedies and musicals in which Norma Balean starred attracted audiences who are not registered as regular theatre visitors.
