Raymond Briggs was born in Wimbledon Park, London, in 1934. At the age of fifteen he went to the local art school and then studied painting for two more years at the Slade School of Fine Art and here he was awarded 'The Diploma of Fine Art (London University)'. Since leaving the Slade School of Fine Art in 1957 he has been a freelance illustrator, book designer and writer producing a number of highly successful illustrated books including The Snowman, Fungus the Bogeyman, When the Wind Blows and Father Christmas, many of which have won prizes including the Kate Greenaway Award.

Swiss Christmas Customs 2005

The Advent, Christmas and New Year period has a wealth of customs. Beside the ones widely known throughout Europe, there are some regional - and even purely local - traditions. Swiss Post is therefore launching its new four-year Christmas Customs series with the special stamps Santa Claus in Fribourg and Grittibänz.

Christmas in Finland

The Christmas stamps feature drawings by painter and illustrator Martta Wendelin (1893-1986). The stamp with the 0.45 € denomination corresponding to the special rate for Christmas cards features a small boy writing a letter to Santa. The picture is a detail of a drawing first published as a New Year card in 1936, gravure printed by Otava. The other stamp, denominated at 0.65 €, features a decorated branch of a Christmas tree.

The Christmas stamps of Finland were issued on 1 November 2002. As previously, there are two stamps: the theme of the 60 cent stamp is an angel blowing a horn, and the 45 cent stamp depicts a sleigh ride from a Christmas service. The stamps were designed by Nina Rantala.

The Place d'Armes in Luxembourg, situated in the heart of the upper city in a pedestrian zone, is proud of its title of "Salon de la Ville", a title given to it years ago by writer Batty Weber. In front of the prestigious "Cercle Municipal" building, which dominates the square in the coolness of the shadow of the plane-trees, the terraces of restaurants and cafés spread out during the summer season.

In 2000, Swiss Post launched its "Christmas tree decoration" set - an overview of a kind of folk art that rarely features on the world's stamps. This year's sequel presents original items and other rare specimens, which are particularly impressive representatives of their periods. These adornments were made from local materials that were in widespread use (glass is not the only material used for Christmas decorations) and took the form of typical objects for that area, with different objects for different regions.

Church of Saltvik

This year the church of Saltvik is nex in line of the popular Aland church series. It is the fiftheenth church stamp over the years.
The church of Saltvik is consecrated to St. Mary, and in the old days it was regarded as the main church of Aland. It is situated near the Bay of Kvarnbo, which was an important harbour in prehistoric and medieval times. One of Aland's largest grave-fields from the Iron Age is only hundred metres from the church.

In Luxembourg and the neighbouring areas, children wait impatiently each year for the morning of 6 December. It is during the night before this feast day that St. Nicholas, accompanied by his old donkey loaded with toys and sweets and by "Père Fouettard" - a truly frightening character, dressed in rags and carrying a tattered sack full of whips - brings his presents to well-behaved children.

This year's Christmas stamps were designed by Ms Katriina Viljamaa-Rissanen. The 2.50 mk stamp, specially denominated for Christmas cards, features "Tiernapojat", the players in a traditional Finnish Christmas tableau, while the 3.50 mk stamp, postage for domestic 1st class letters, depicts a Christmas decoration with birds.
