Iron Age on stamp in Aland
Exciting finds in Aland
The Iron age has left some quite exciting finds in Aland. Two of the finer finds, the "Persby buckle" and the "Syllöda pin", are now depicted on a stamp.Syllöda pin
Both subjects on the stamps are jewellery items and for display at the Aland Museum. It is difficult to decide with certainty if a man or a woman has worn the two pieces of jewellery, but most likely is that the finds originate from female graves. The magnificent "Syllöda pin" is made from bronze and was found in 1956. A farmer in the vilage Syllöda, Saltvik, found it when he was digging a flowerbed next to his house. The pin was not merely decorative, but also for fastening the cloak. It's ornamented head has been gilded with a thick layer of gold and is decorated with silver plates.
The pin most likely originates from the British Isles or Ireland. The pin is presumably made in the 8th or 9th century.
Persby buckle
The small "Persby buckle" was found in a grave-field in the village Persby, Sund, which was thoroughly excavated in 1962. The item was found together with almost two kilos of burnt bones, some small ornamented bronze pieces and parts of a larger set of beads. The stylish buckle is only a few centimetres long and made in silver with garnet and gold ornamentation. It was probably used for decorating clothes and has been dated back to the beginning of the 8th century. The "Persby buckle" originally came from the continent of England.Issue: Aland 9 September 2002
