UK Christmas 2005

Stamps celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ

The UK Christmas 2005 issue celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ with iconic paintings of the Madonna and Child. The stamps show beautiful interpretations from around the globe, covering five continents. Each one is unique in its visual representation, yet all are equally significant and eternal. Bring life to your Christmas post with these Mint Stamps.

Christian festival of Christmas

The Christian festival of Christmas was adopted from earlier pagan winter solstice celebrations, between 17th December and January 1st. Lights and greenery were used to decorate houses to mark the rebirth of the sun, and presents were given to children and the poor.

Stamps designed by Irene von Treskow

The Madonna and Child is one of the most universally cherished pieces of iconography. This Christmas issue draws on images from European, Haitian, Italian, Indian, Native American and Aboriginal backgrounds. The six paintings featured on the Christmas stamps were found by illustrator and priest Irene von Treskow, in museums, books and one was even sent to her on a Christmas card, in what she describes as 'a friendly greeting from God'.

First Day Cover

Designed by So Design, the First Day Cover Envelope was printed by Smurfit Print UK, whilst the filler card was printed by Fulmar Colour Printing Limited.
