Stamp DayStamp Day competition
In 2001 the staging of the second public "Stamp Day" competition was held in Switzerland. From December 2000 until the end of March 2001, people in various parts of Switzerland had an opportunity to have their say on the 2001 Stamp Day stamp designs.Traveling exhibitionsOver a three month period, traveling exhibitions in Zurich, St. Gall, Basel, Lucerne, Aarau, Lausanne and Monthey gave the Swiss general public an opportunity to select their favourite design. For the first time, they could cast their vote via the internet, and 40% of the 6000 voters opted for this method.Modern Architecture in BaselSwiss Post set "Modern Architecture in Basel" as the theme for the special stamp and invited both established stamp designers as well as artists who had never tried their hands at stamps to submit designs.Balabra Stamp ExhibitionThe winner was announced on 21 April 2001 at the Balabra Stamp Exhibition at Liestal. It turned out to be Beat Kehrli, a graphic artist based in Hasliberg, who received nearly a quarter of all the votes.Stamp Designer Beat KehrliFollowing an apprenticeship as a surveyor's draughtsman, Beat Kehrli went on to teach himself the graphic art business and has been his own boss since 1988, focussing mainly on tourism, hydroelectric power, insurance, watches and jewellery.
