Church of FöglöStamp depicting the church of Föglö
The stamp depicting the church of Föglö is issued as the 14th stamp in the popular church series of Aland. The church is situated next to one of the old Viking fairways.Beautiful stone churchThis beautiful stone church is consecrated to St Mary Magdalene and has a nave built in the 14th century. The tower is believed to be an old defence tower from about 1170. This tower was probably placed next to an old wooden church at the same place as the stone church is standing today.Reconstruction began in 1859In the beginning of the 19th century discussions about an extension of the church began. The congregation of Föglö had two smaller chapel congregations at this time and that is why the church soon was considered too small. The reconstruction began in 1859 when the sanctuary, the church porch, the vestry and the eastern part of the nave were torn down and replaced by a new nave and transept. The stone used to build the church was taken from rocks around the church. Stamp in detailDate of issue: 9 October 2001.Design: Pirkko Vahtero. Denomination: 2m. Size: 25.73 x 35.96mm. Print: Offset.
