New issues of AlandThree new stamp series were issued in Aland this year: The Elk, Europe and Gymnastics. The Elk
In all there are seven different elk races in the world, three in Europe and Asia, while four live in North America. The Nordic race can be found in Scandinavia, Poland and Russia and its scientific name is Alces alces. The elk is by far the largest deer in the Nordic and together with the polar bear Europe's largest mammal on land. It may be 2.2 m. at the shoulders, 2.9 m. in length and up to 800 kg in weight. The elk has grey-white legs, while the fur is more brownish. The young are red-brown. The elk gets its first antler already during its first autumn, but it's only in the following spring they really start to grow. Date of issue: 1 March 2000. Value: 2.60 Mk. (all four stamps). Design: Leif Holmqvist. Size: 35.96 x 24.5 mm. Europe
This year's Europe stamp is unique. The motif is nearly the same in all participating countries. The Europe stamp is a colourful issue with a lot of symbolism. The stamp depicts a dynamic Europe seething with life. The stars symbolise the European countries and the tower consisting of the different countries and cultures forms a unity. The children, who in the picture approach the tower from all four directions, build the future of Europe.Stamp in detailDate of issue: 9 May 2000.Value: 3.00 Mk. Design: Jean-Paul Cousin. Size: 26 x 35.4 mm. Gymnastics
The Finish-Swedish gymnastics association (FSG) generally invites to a big gymnastics festival every four years. This time the turn has come to Aland. The Post takes the opportunity to celebrate this by issuing a self-adhesive stamp in a coil. The design is particularly interesting. The stamp's motif is a sculpture of a gymnast, which later has been photographed.
The gymnastics festival takes place 9-11 June in a summery Mariehamn. Some 2,000 gymnasts are expected to take part in the show. For the first time the Aland Post will issue self-adhesive stamps in coils. Each coil consists of 100 stamps. The back of every five stamps will for practical reasons have a number, which marks how many stamps are left in the coil. Joh. Enschedé from the Netherlands printed the coils.
